"This is one of the most effective ways to alleviate poverty in Africa" - Hon Margaret Sitta MP, Minister for Education (Tz)
Through a community of student-run READ Book Projects, we mobilise university students to collect disused, high-quality Key Stage 3 and GCSE textbooks from UK secondary schools. Our student volunteers give presentations to schools pupils to promote student volunteering, young social enterprise, recycling and global citizenship.
Our operating model is simple and low-cost and makes best use of a large supply of motivated, enterprising, and enthusiastic voluntary labour.
To date, READ Book Projects have donated over 850,000 textbooks to over 580 Tanzanian secondary schools and twenty three regional libraries.
Next summer 2011 we aim to deliver another 300,000 across to Tanzania and Uganda - and ship our millionth book to East Africa!
All Scottish, Welsh and Irish projects deliver resources to Ugandan secondary schools. English projects deliver resources to Tanzania.
The books will be used in the daily education of children working towards their Key Stage 3 and GCSE equivalent exams.
Why??
Because we believe that everyone has a right to an education.
